JAZZ LEGEND
ANNIE ROSS
EVERY TUESDAY AT 9:30!

annie-ross01.jpg

"Ms. Ross is a master class in how to sing jazz inside out, upside and down......Her sense of time and rhythm will fracture you...." ~ Rex Reed

Annie Ross has been an abundant contributor to the art of jazz for over 50 years. Born in the UK, she has been a permanent resident of the USA for many years and a US citizen since 2001. The following are some highlights of what has been a long and illustrious career in jazz:

Annie Ross is one of the pioneers of vocalese and the composer of "Twisted", one of the most well known examples of that art, as well as "Farmers Market", quot;Jackie" and many others. A founding member of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, considered the greatest jazz vocal ensemble of all time, her influence is present in all subsequent practitioners of vocalese. “Twisted“ has been recorded by a host of vocalists, including some not normally associated with jazz, including Joni Mitchell and Bette Midler.

Annie Ross toured in the 50’s with the extraordinary Lionel Hampton band that included Art Farmer, Clifford Brown, Gigi Gryce, and Quincy Jones. Ms. Ross has recorded with James Moody, Kenny Clarke, Milt Jackson, Harry Sweets Edison, the Count Basie band, Louis Armstrong, Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Chet Baker and many more. In this variety of settings, she became known as a great jazz singer, masterful at ballads and up tempos, with the ability to swing hard, improvise and make every lyric meaningful and revealing.

As a child, Annie Ross entered a talent show on the radio accompanied by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, which resulted an a six-month contract with MGM. She went to Hollywood at age eight where she appeared in "The Little Rascals" singing a jazz version of "Loch Lomond." At age eleven she appeared as Judy Garland’s sister in "Presenting Lily Mars." At age 14 she composed the song "Let's Fly", which was subsequently recorded by Johnny Mercer and Jo Stafford.

In Paris in the late 40’s, she met up with musicians involved in modern jazz, including James Moody, Kenny Clarke, Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, Billy Strayhorn, and displayed an unerring ear and savvy sense of harmony, which was much appreciated. At 19, she recorded “Le Vent Vert” with Moody. Back in the U.S. at age 21 she recorded for Savoy, along with Clarke, Milt Jackson and Percy Heath. She worked on 52nd St. with Max Roach, Tommy Potter and George Wallington and subbed for Billie Holiday at the Apollo Theater. The original recordings of “Twisted” and “Farmer’s Market” were done in 1952 with Wallington on piano and Art Blakey on drums.

Annie Ross has continued to bring the essence of jazz to a broad spectrum of listeners internationally, by touring, through her recordings, conducting workshops, writing, and appearances in film, television and radio.

Currently, Annie Ross is living in New York and is still active as a jazz performer, having recently performed in New York, Scotland, and Spain as well as having recorded a new CD, Let Me Sing..

"Truly gripping lyrics with great themes and troubling, witty messages.  An
inspirational artist" (Leith FM Radio, Scotland UK)
"Man! This guy sings from the heart and then some.  Each song yanks the listener
fully into the story and rhythms, not to mention an emotionality imbuing Wates'
plaintively melodic voice.  Every cut's a gem, completely absorbing, enthralling,
and thus we have a new and unique songwriter/musician already in the front ranks"
(Folk And Acoustic Music Exchange)
"A delight to listen to...These are songs crafted with care and imbued with
sincerity and conviction" (Britsound Radion New Jersey)
"You feel, not just hear, his music and lyrics.  He ended his set with "I Dream", a
song reminiscent of Jacques Brel's work, to a standing ovation" (Eileen Batson,
North Carolina Songwriters Co-op)

"Rupert Wates and friends perform songs from his forthcoming album 'Joe's Cafe'.
Based on true stories, the songs evoke the experience of ordinary American people
from the dust bowl to the present day"

W. 73rd: Kurt Weill Project

west73rdkurtweillnov

Like much of Kurt Weill's music, the Kurt Weill Project was conceived in the spirit of collaboration. United by their musical curiosity and shared love of jazz, pianist Frank Ponzio, bassist Peter Donovan, drummer Vito Lesczak, and vocalist Hilary Gardner embarked on a musical journey through the eclectic, haunting, and deeply human world of Kurt Weill.Unwilling to restrict their creativity to a specific genre, the musicians agreed early on that the music itself should be their guide. Their resulting recording, A Song About Forever, explores Weill's music from a jazz perspective, while incorporating the classical, theatrical, and global influences that continue to makeWeill's music compelling to listeners from all walks of life. The quartet calls itself "West 73rd" in a nod to where their musical collaboration began: in the studio of pianist/producer Frank Ponzio on West 73rd Street inManhattan. The members of West 73rd draw their inspiration from the non-stop energy pulsing through the streets of New York City. Their resulting music is as sophisticated, dynamic and ever-changing as New York itself.

MEG FLATHER BACK AT METROPOLITAN ROOM, NYC, WITH NEW SHOW --
“HOME SHOPPING DIVA” – SAT., DEC. 12, 9:30 PM

NEW YORK, Fall 2009 – Meg Flather (www.megflather.com), known to millions as one of home shopping television’s most popular on-air personalities, returns to New York’s Metropolitan Room (34 West 22 Street in Manhattan) with a brand new show.  Flather will appear in “Home Shopping Diva…songs of love, loss, & lipstick” at the Metropolitan Room Sunday, November 1 at 4 pm and Saturday, December 12, at 9:30 pm.  Call 212-206-0440 for reservations.  There is a $15 cover charge and two-drink minimum.

“Home Shopping Diva…songs of love, loss, & lipstick” is inspired by Flather’s second career as a popular cosmetics salesperson on domestic and international home shopping TV channels.  But Flather, who has appeared on QVC, Shop NBC, HSN, TVSN ( Australia ), and The Shopping Channel ( Canada ), has enjoyed a life-long parallel career as an acclaimed singer and songwriter.  With more than two decades writing and performing, Flather boasts five albums, all of which are commercially available via www.amazon.com and www.theorchard.com. A member of ASCAP her original compositions are published by Margaret Hall Music.

Laced with humorous snippets of her life story, including a childhood spent in the Philippines where her father was a director for the US Peace Corps during the Kennedy Administration, “Home Shopping Diva” celebrates Flather’s life behind the cosmetic counters of New York City (“I think I worked at every department store in New York,” she says).  That experience, together with her training as a performer on stage and television (Flather was a regular comic actor on Conan O’Brien’s New York TV show for NBC) made her what she is today:  One of television’s top cosmetic hawkers beloved by millions of women.   In addition to hommage to the great female singers and composers who inspired her musical career, Flather’s “Home Shopping Diva” includes some comedy songs as well as sendups of the home shopping TV phenomenon and heartfelt snippets of her work advising women seeking the lost luster of their youth.

As a singer and songwriter, Flather is a two-time Backstage Bistro Award-winner.  Her original music is heard in the soundtracks of theatrical films, including one that bowed at the Cannes Film Festival, as well in as the Off-Broadway play, “Acts of Love,” and “A Secret Best Not Kept,” a multi-media project to prevent teen suicide.  She has also performed as a special guest at the Tribeca and Vermont Film Festivals.  As a comedic actor Flather has been seen on NBC’s “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and the syndicated “Rosie O’Donnell Show.”

Her band includes pianist Paul Greenwood, drummer John Mettam, and bass player Jamie Rogers.

"Cold Comfort"

"Mr. Comstock and Ms. Fasano are turning the neighborhood into a hotbed of
pleasure." -- Stephen Holden, The New York Times

"When they sing together, the evening is transformed from collaboration to alchemy
... the combination works magic." -- Frank Scheck, New York Post

"Now greater than the sum of their impressive individual talents."
-- David Finkle, Village Voice

Music critics have compared them to Fred & Ginger, Lunt & Fontanne, and Nick & Nora,
but husband-and-wife team Eric Comstock and Barbara Fasano's unique combination of
warmth, wit and sensuality makes the American songbook, past and present, entirely
their own. Their March 2009 engagement at the Metropolitan Room, "Wrap Your

The Face of My Love: CD Release

kengrevescdcover

This project was inspired and modeled after Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides
Now", which I consider to be a jazz song cycle describing the arc of a
modern relationship. It is more than a concept album, which is really
treating a single idea; whereas in this CD, it is a journey with a
beginning, middle and end, that eventually cycles over again. I cannot
escape my classical roots and this gave me the form I needed in which to
choose the content. I wanted a framework of a very intimate jazz trio sound
that was understated and elegant in which to tell the stories. It all begins
and ends with the power of a dream. All the songs in some way reference a
heavenly body, to convey the idea as Hamlet says to Horatio, "There are more
things in heaven and earth. than are dreamt of in your philosophy." (Act 1 Sc V).

Annie Ross (9:30 PM)

JAZZ LEGEND

Barbara Fasano & Eric Comstock (4:00 PM)

Barbara Fasano & Eric Comstock

"Cold Comfort"

fasano

Music critics have compared them to Fred & Ginger, Lunt & Fontanne, and Nick & Nora,
but husband-and-wife team Eric Comstock and Barbara Fasano's unique combination of
warmth, wit and sensuality makes the American songbook, past and present, entirely
their own. Their March 2009 engagement at the Metropolitan Room, "Wrap Your
Troubles In Dreams", received unanimous praise. With their winter confection, COLD
COMFORT, they'll take the chill out of December.

Annie Ross (9:30 PM)

JAZZ LEGEND
