Christine Reisner

"Songs of Albert Hague"

directed by Eric Michael Gillett
musical direction by Tex Arnold with special guest Jon Burr on bass

christinereisner

Singer Christine Reisner will appear at New York City's Metropolitan Room to premiere a retrospective of songs by her late uncle, TONY-Award winning composer Albert Hague. Directed by Eric Michael Gillett and featuring pianist Tex Arnold and Jon Burr on bass, the evening celebrates the oeuvre of one of America's national treasures. Interpreted with insightful warmth and wit by Christine Reisner, the musical world of Albert Hague comes alive in this winning one-hour show.

Riding high on the success of her recent CD release "Beginner's Luck," currently receiving airplay around the country and by Jonathan Schwartz on WNYC, Christine Reisner pays tribute to the magic of her uncle's life and work. From the tender age of seven she immersed herself in his music. Her anecdotes are much more than just oral history, but rather a heartfelt, sometimes comedic journey that completes her unique presentation of the songs by her revered Uncle Albert.
Christine made a name for herself as a cabaret star in France and as a dancer in the company of the famous Alwin Nikolais. Her guest appearances with other choreographers (including Beverly Blossom and Henning Rübsam)

garnered her praise by such critics as Jennifer Dunning, who commented in The New York Times on Christine's work with Rübsam: "... his gift for celebrating a dancer's individual qualities comes to the fore. The solo

makes the most of the charming Christine Reisner and her skill at quicksilver physical and emotional shifts."

JAZZ LEGEND
ANNIE ROSS
EVERY TUESDAY AT 9:30!

annie-ross01.jpg

"Ms. Ross is a master class in how to sing jazz inside out, upside and down......Her sense of time and rhythm will fracture you...." ~ Rex Reed

Annie Ross has been an abundant contributor to the art of jazz for over 50 years. Born in the UK, she has been a permanent resident of the USA for many years and a US citizen since 2001. The following are some highlights of what has been a long and illustrious career in jazz:

Annie Ross is one of the pioneers of vocalese and the composer of "Twisted", one of the most well known examples of that art, as well as "Farmers Market", quot;Jackie" and many others. A founding member of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, considered the greatest jazz vocal ensemble of all time, her influence is present in all subsequent practitioners of vocalese. “Twisted“ has been recorded by a host of vocalists, including some not normally associated with jazz, including Joni Mitchell and Bette Midler.

Annie Ross toured in the 50’s with the extraordinary Lionel Hampton band that included Art Farmer, Clifford Brown, Gigi Gryce, and Quincy Jones. Ms. Ross has recorded with James Moody, Kenny Clarke, Milt Jackson, Harry Sweets Edison, the Count Basie band, Louis Armstrong, Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Chet Baker and many more. In this variety of settings, she became known as a great jazz singer, masterful at ballads and up tempos, with the ability to swing hard, improvise and make every lyric meaningful and revealing.

As a child, Annie Ross entered a talent show on the radio accompanied by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, which resulted an a six-month contract with MGM. She went to Hollywood at age eight where she appeared in "The Little Rascals" singing a jazz version of "Loch Lomond." At age eleven she appeared as Judy Garland’s sister in "Presenting Lily Mars." At age 14 she composed the song "Let's Fly", which was subsequently recorded by Johnny Mercer and Jo Stafford.

In Paris in the late 40’s, she met up with musicians involved in modern jazz, including James Moody, Kenny Clarke, Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, Billy Strayhorn, and displayed an unerring ear and savvy sense of harmony, which was much appreciated. At 19, she recorded “Le Vent Vert” with Moody. Back in the U.S. at age 21 she recorded for Savoy, along with Clarke, Milt Jackson and Percy Heath. She worked on 52nd St. with Max Roach, Tommy Potter and George Wallington and subbed for Billie Holiday at the Apollo Theater. The original recordings of “Twisted” and “Farmer’s Market” were done in 1952 with Wallington on piano and Art Blakey on drums.

Annie Ross has continued to bring the essence of jazz to a broad spectrum of listeners internationally, by touring, through her recordings, conducting workshops, writing, and appearances in film, television and radio.

Currently, Annie Ross is living in New York and is still active as a jazz performer, having recently performed in New York, Scotland, and Spain as well as having recorded a new CD, Let Me Sing..

Rosemary Loar (7:30 PM)

Rosemary Loar

"Sting, Stang, Stung"

rosmaryloar

Rosemary began her singing career in the back seat of a station wagon with her other six brothers and sisters.  Her father would take the family on Sunday drives and the concert would begin.  Her songs are an intimate conversation about her emotional ‘take’ on the world, her singular way of processing events and relationships in her life.  Rosemary’s sense of humor and intensity is apparent in her writing style:  sometimes she is screaming back at God with a smile on her face and sometimes she is whispering in your ear. “it’s O.K. I’ve been there too.” Rosemary influences are eclectic.  Her first five years in New York City were spent performing a critically acclaimed jazz cabaret act.  Where she wrote the arrangements and broke new ground in what was then, a very homogenous venue.
Loar’s theatrical expertise was honed on Broadway and in national tours, in shows like Sunset Boulevard, Cats (critically acclaimed as Grizabella), You Can’t Take It With You, Chess, Once Upon A Mattress, (understudy to Queen Aggravain) Encore and 42nd Street (understudy Dorothy Brock.) She originated the role of Gladys Fritts (a quirky flapper with a penchant for poetry, operatic singing and handsome men), in Radio Gals at the John Houseman Theatre.

She was a headliner for the PBS special, New Years Eve with Guy Lombardo. Rosemary Clooney was rushed to the hospital and Rosemary Loar came to the rescue: with all the keys a fourth higher. As a concert performer she has appeared at: Carnegie Hall, (the day after she was married),  92nd Street “Y”,  at Town Hall in Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion, with the North Carolina Symphony, the Orlando Symphony and with the Peter Duchin and Nelson Riddle Orchestras. She regularly performs the role of Christine in The Andrew Lloyd Webber Tribute internationally and in different venues.  As a recording artist she can be heard on Sting’s soundtrack for the movie The Emperor’s New Groove, the cast albums of Chess and Sunset Boulevard and on the Listening Library series.

Her debut CD ALTERNATIVE TORCH was released in 1996, her second, THROUGH WOMEN'S EYES was produced in 1997 to benefit Susan G. Komen Foundation.  WATER FROM THE MOON released in 2003 is also the score of Rosemary’s original rock musical by the same name: produced by the Grammy award winning Joel Moss (soundtrack for Chicago).

Rosemary’s songs have been featured on NBC’s The Today Show, on The Lifetime Network, at Town Hall, Joe Franklin and Joan Hamburg shows, at the UN Fourth Conference for Women in Beijing and in the documentary Our Daughters, Our Future narrated by Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Ms. Loar has been the recipient of the ASCAPlus Award for Popular Music for the past six years. Rosemary plays out with her band in the New York metro area. The Alternative Torch Series at Symphony
Space (four rock/pop singer/songwriters, four Broadway divas, one great band), which she conceived and directed, played to screaming crowds from 2004-2006. The release of Rosemary's new CD, The Quando Swing, punctuates her return to the jazz-cabaret scene. For Rosemary Loar, jazz is a smorgasbord, a feast of incredible tastes and textures. In The Quando Swing, Rosemary makes it her business to give her audience the opportunity to sample each and every one of those exotic flavors. There is laughter and fun, poignancy and reflection, and an evening of
wonderful music. For more info check out www.TheShowStore.com

Her 1990 recording of "Lift Every Voice and Sing," was instrumental in having the song entered into the Congressional Record as the official African American National Anthem. Directly on the heels of "Hair," came the role of Lutiebelle Gussiemae Jenkins, the innocent southern domestic who falls in love with a fast-talking preacher, in the long running musical, "Purlie," the role which launched her successful TV and recording career. Her show-stopping performance in "Purlie," won Melba the Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress In A Musical, again making her the first black actress to do so. In 1996 history repeated itself the third time when Melba took over the role of "Fantine" in the Broadway musical "Les Miserables." She was the first Black actress to step into the leading role in that milestone Broadway musical.Ms. Moore is deeply spiritual, seeking daily wisdom from the Bible. She is an ardent advocate for the rights of children resulting in her "Melba Moore Foundation for Abused & Neglected Children." Jenna Esposito (4:00 PM)

Jenna Esposito Sings Connie Francis

jenna2010

JENNA ESPOSITO – a 2008 and 2009 MAC (Manhattan Association of Clubs) Award Nominee for “Best Female Vocalist” – will bring poodle skirts and puppy love back to the big city with her critically acclaimed show, “Jenna Esposito Sings Connie Francis.”

“Jenna Esposito Sings Connie Francis”is an engaging and endearing time capsule that revisits the musical world one of the most beloved and best-selling female vocalists of the 20th Century. Directed by Lennie Watts with musical direction by Fortune Esposito, the show features a five piece band and backup singers, complete with period vocal arrangements. Jenna explores the ups and downs of Connie’s legendary career, her hidden love with fellow teen idol Bobby Darin and Jenna's touching personal story of meeting the great lady herself. Like Connie’s eclectic output, the
show ranges from pop hits such as “Where The Boys Are,” “Stupid Cupid“ and “Who's Sorry Now,” to rock and roll classics to numbers from her landmark foreign language albums.

What The Critics are Saying about Jenna Esposito Sings Connie Francis!! "I can't imagine a better or more fitting tribute to Connie Francis.  It may seem fatuous to label this show perfect, but the truth is there is not a thing I would
suggest changing; what's more, Jenna sounds spectacularly good."
-Roy Sander, columnist and critic

"If heart and soul and some impressive vocal chops, is your thing, then Jenna Esposito Sings Connie Francis is your show."
-Elizabeth Ahlfors, Cabaret Scenes

"The show combines the best of a rock concert and the intelligence, elegance, and detail one expects from the best cabaret... Jenna Esposito Sings Connie Francis is a winning throwback to Francis' late 50s-early 60s heyday, sung by an engaging singer with some serious pipes!"
-Jonathan Warman, DramaQueenNYC.com

Annie Ross (9:30 PM)

JAZZ LEGEND

"PIAF: Queen of Heart"

BEST REASON TO GO OUT IN A BLIZZARD: GAY MARSHALL’S PIAF RETURNS TO THE METROPOLITAN ROOM IN FEBRUARY/MARCH

CD: ‘Gay Marshall Sings Piaf, La Vie l’Amour’ makes BILLBOARD Top World Album Chart

New York, New York –January 19 –By popular demand, Gay Marshall -BILLBOARD Top World Music Artist and Playbill Top 10 Diva - will reprise her stunning concert series - PIAF: Queen of Heart - at New York’s Metropolitan Room this winter. The show schedule is Thursdays, February 18th and 25th, March 4th, 11th and 18th at 7:30 PM .

Her previous engagement of PIAF: Queen of Heart had audiences on their feet every night, and landed her on Time Out's 2009 10 Best of Cabaret list. "It takes a brave singer to take on the Edith Piaf songbook," wrote Time Out New York, "it takes a special one to pull it off so heart-piercingly."

The concert series is based on Marshall’s CD, Gay Marshall Sings Piaf, La Vie l’Amour, which listed on BILLBOARD’S Top World Album Chart last week as a #12 Hot Shot Debut. PIAF: Queen of Heart is Marshall’s vivacious and original take on Piaf - far from the traditional perception of her as a tragic icon. Instead, she presents a versatile powerhouse of heartwarming and heartbreaking emotion, full of personality and humor. "Piaf was so much more than ‘the poor little thing,’" Marshall told NPR’s Scott Simon recently, "she’s much more magic than tragic." Marshall delivers the dramatic repertoire – including her own English adaptations - with stirring authenticity, and not a hint of imitation. Her choice of songs is an unusual mix of the well known ("L’Accordeoniste" and "Padam Padam") and the rare ("Avec Ce Soleil"), accompanied live by a superb five piece ensemble. The original arrangements by Marshall and Paul Bevan are a refreshingly modern take on a classical theme. BistroAwards.com praised the way Marshall "fiercely inhabits every song." Cabaret Scenes described her as "mesmerizing," and wrote "Gay Marshall amazes at every turn as she embodies the passion, spirit, joy, humor and tragedy of Piaf."

Marshall, who played Diana Morales in A Chorus Line on Broadway and created Grizabella in the French production of Cats, has lived and worked mainly in Europe since she fell in love with French photographer, Jean-Louis Blondeau (Man On Wire). She re-captured the attention of New York audiences with her performance in the Zipper Theater’s revival of Jacques Brel Is Alive And Well And Living In Paris. Charles Isherwood wrote of Marshall in the New York Times, "To hear her sing Brel's despairing ‘Ne Me Quitte Pas,’ ….is to experience Brel's art in its purest and most persuasive form."

Rosemary Loar (4:00 PM)

Beautiful Baby Concert

amycervini

Jazz Vocal Group Monday Off @ Metropolitan Room, Feburary 21, 9:30 PM Making their Metropolitan Room debut, jazz vocal group Monday Off (Amy Cervini, Melissa Dye, Richard Roland, Raymond Sage) is happy to be
performing one last concert before both women in the group have babies! Join them to celebrate this exciting time and hear new ³baby-themed² arrangements!  Monday Off will be joined by some of the finest musicians in
New York City, Michael Cabe on piano, and Mark Lau on bass.  ³This girl-boy-girl-boy harmony quartet is all about polish, which may explain why they sound like accomplished background singers from the '50's. Standards
are their bread and butter, but they can throw curveballs: Ask for their version of "Blackbird." - Time Out NY
www.mondayoff.org

Monday Off is an exciting addition to the world of vocal jazz. The group¹s
members  - Amy Cervini, Melissa Dye, Richard Roland, Raymond Sage
successfully combine the sounds of the vocal groups of the big-band era with
Broadway sensibilities and contemporary harmonies creating their own brand
of Broadway Jazz, exploring everything from standards to not-so standards to
vocalese to adapting tunes from musical theatre to their harmonic styles.

The group¹s members have strong backgrounds in musical theatre and have
derived the name of the group from theatre¹s traditional night off: Monday.
In fact, two of the members met and founded Monday Off while touring
together in the Broadway musical Titanic. The combined theatrical experience
of the group is vast, culminating in more than a dozen Broadway and
off-Broadway productions, National Tours, original cast recordings,
television commercials and soap operas.

Monday Off has become a regular fixture on the New York City club scene in addition to their performances in larger concert halls across the country including Carnegie Hall with Skitch Henderson and the New York Pops, The
Wheeling Symphony, The Erie Philharmonic & The San Angelo Symphony.  Monday Off made their television debut on ABC World News Now performing Christmas songs from their debut album with Bucky Pizzarelli that was released in 2001.  Their second CD, "Monday Off" was released in 2006 to critical acclaim.

David Buskin & Robin Batteau (7:00 PM)

David Buskin & Robin Batteau

buskinphoto

After a thirteen-year hiatus to 1) be dads, and 2) take a nap, Buskin & Batteau are back on the road again. Singer-songwriter-soloists David Buskin & Robin Batteau have just put the finishing touches on their long-anticipated new CD, Red Shoes and Golden Hearts to be released by Nouveau Retro Media on May 1. In their new album and in their performances, they continue to offer their audiences, in the words of The Washington Post, "an irresistible amalgam of melodic, sensual pop, folkie grit and killer wit.”

David Buskin and Robin Batteau evoke a wide range of emotions in their audiences, ranging from light-hearted amusement at "ESPN", or the pun-filled "Death in Venice", to a gentle sense of loss expressed by their beautiful ballad for the late Kate Wolf, "Never Cry Wolf".

As professional jingle writers, Buskin & Batteau's voices and tunes have been heard in almost every American household. They've had us listening "to the heartbeat of America", living "in a Burger King Town" and climbing "all aboard Amtrak".

The popular duo also brings their unique style and sound to the stage and the audience has come to expect the unexpected whenever David and Robin perform. Drawing inspiration from current events they gave us "Second Homeless", on the heels of the October 1987 stock market crash, a tongue-in-cheek portrayal of the plight of stockbrokers no longer able to afford a second home.

Buskin & Batteau combine talent, humor and showmanship with the element of surprise to produce a crowd-pleasing performance.

Annie Ross (9:30 PM)

JAZZ LEGEND

Broadway, television and music star Tom Wopat returns to perform his interpretation of songs like “But Not for Me”, “That’s Life” and “2 Grey Rooms”. The Tony nominated singer and actor recently came out with his eighth studio album, Consider it Swung. While many know him best for his role as Luke Duke in The Dukes of Hazzard, Tom Wopat got his start on Broadway in the musical I LOVE MY WIFE in 1977 and has never strayed very far from the theatre. He appeared in ANNIE GET YOUR GUN opposite Bernadette Peters, in stage revivals of CHICAGO and 42ND STREET and more recently in David Mamet’s GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS.  Stephen Holden from The New York Times said “With Tom Wopat, you get cool tunes, manly grace, the scent of Musk and Gary Cooper getting in touch with his delicate side in 'High Noon', all rolled into one. That's more than I've seen on one cabaret stage in many a donkey's year. Do not miss him. This is a real revelation."

Elisabeth Cernadas & Les Bandits (4:00 PM)

Elisabeth Cernadas & Les Bandits

"Using mostly material from the 1960s, sung in French and English, Les Bandits’ show is fascinating and unusual—to say the least—in its musical accompaniment: all on the small cabaret stage, we have a glockenspiel, melodica, sax (these three all by Chris Shade) cello, bass, ukulele, drums, percussion. And a harp! Versatile, glowing and girlish, with lovely high tones, Elisabeth Cernadas does all the singing and spoken intros. Certainly this is an ensemble triumph. They appreciatively listen to each other and have a striking serenity. Intelligent, and a valentine to the music and era, joy radiates and the musicianship is as marvelous to drink in as to watch being played: struck, strummed, bowed, etc. Whatever they play and sing—Oscar Brown, Jr.’s “Forbidden Fruit,” a couple from The Beatles’ White album (“Rocky Raccoon,” “Blackbird”) and “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” (in French!!), their original “Uke Song,” French poetry, sweet innocence or knowing sophistication—it’s all smartly done, fresh, winsome, and unaffected. Fantastique." Rob Lester Cabaret Scenes

Pat Holley Sings Tall Songs & Forgotten Gems

After a lifetime of singing, Pat Holley calls Tall Songs songs that rise above the average. In their original form they are often lengthier and quite possibly more detailed. Forgotten Gems are simply wonderful songs not often heard today. Pat will also be singing several of her own compositions from her new musical, “Me & Caesar Lee.” with special guest jazz artist Tommy Morimoto, DownBeat Magazine prize-winning saxophonist, Brubeck Fellowship recipient and former weekly guest with the late, great Les Paul

“Pat Holley’s warm voice instantly finds its way to your heart.”  -Czekus Mihaly, www.hificity.hu, 2007

“Pat Holley is a fascinating singer with a warm, personal flow. Her singing is phrased beautifully and sensitively in a warm and winning voice.” John Wilson, New York Times, 1976

“Pat Holley’s vocal journey is a lesson in intimacy and lyrical performance.”

-Don Kimenker, www.EarBuzz.com, 2008

“The comments I got on Pat Holley were about the joy and personality exuding in her performance, that she is a performer with extreme stage presence and that her musical phrasing was lyrical.” -Kristine Niven, Artistic New Directions, 2007
