Cabaret Scenes with Cabaret Teens
Let the Series Begin… with Irving Berlin
Join us for this brand new benefit series featuring performers aged 13-19 pursuing professional careers in entertainment, who have a love and flair for the songs written long before they were born ---- which will outlast their own lives, too. You’ll note how they relish the notes and also compare notes with their special guests--- “slightly older” established cabaret performers (see below).
When these talented, trained teens take charge, it’s refreshing as any presumed dust disappears from the old material and it’s richly relevant in their personalized presentations – including their own perspective, some history, and humor. Rather than just another attempt in bringing the Great American Songbook to teenagers, we have teen-aged singers bringing it to other teens and families and general audiences. The shows have an all-teen band. So, they’re making the venue sometimes “The MetropoliTeen Room.”
The catalogue of Irving Berlin seems like a good place to start --- exploring and encoring famous and not-so-famous numbers from the composer-lyricist who brought us such enduring songs as “White Christmas” and “There’s No Business Like Show Business” and will “Always” be worth celebrating.
The series title, Cabaret Scenes with Cabaret Teens, reflects the organizations which will get half the proceeds: Cabaret Scenes Magazine and its Cabaret Foundation, bringing the only print magazine dedicated to cabaret and the standards (see www.CabaretScenes.org) and charities serving teens in need of help.
Additional donors/sponsors are sought to expand this program throughout the year. Hosted by singer-actor Tony Ponella, age 18. He’s the runner-up in last year’s Michael Feinstein Initiative, the national competition for teens singing standards. He spent a “White Christmas” as a special guest of Sylvia McNair in her symphony holiday concerts. Making his way in NYC show biz as a new city resident, he’s already landed several acting roles and sung at Feinstein’s at Loews Regency,
