Stephen Hanks Presents New York Cabaret’s Greatest Hits

LAURIE KRAUZ: 25 YEARS WITH MUSICAL DIRECTOR DARYL KOJAK

Twenty-five years ago, burgeoning jazz singer Laurie Krauz was looking for a new musical director to help her expand her musical language. Someone recommended a pianist named Daryl Kojak and something clicked at that very first session together.

“I remember feeling as if I was being levitated off the floor when Daryl played for me,” Laurie says. As for Kojak, he was immediately struck by Krauz’s vocal versatility and what calls her “adventurous musical spirit. Work with Laurie,” he says, “has been an enormously satisfying collaboration.”

“It was magic,” adds Laurie, “and it has remained magic for a quarter of a century.” Now, 25 years after that first session, dozens of performances together in almost every major venue in New York and around the country, and CD recordings, Laurie Krauz and Daryl Kojak will perform their “Greatest Hits” in Cabaret Life Productions Producer Stephen Hanks’ (with Associate Producer Fr. Jeffrey Hamblin, MD) monthly Metropolitan Room series New York Cabaret’s Greatest Hits. The ninth show since the series launched in August 2015 will be presented on Friday, May 13 at 7 pm.

“For this show, we’re going to present our favorites and our most requested songs from a catalogue of 25 years,” says Laurie. “Our goal with this show is to do what we did that first day in Daryl’s studio--express ourselves together with every note, every lyric, every moment. We’re enormously excited to celebrate this very long and extraordinarily fulfilling collaboration with our audience. And, of course, we promise to bring the house down. Really, we’re just celebrating the kickoff to the next 25 years.”

Named on of the top 500 jazz vocalists of all time in a 2007 book by noted jazz critic Scott Yanow, Bronx-born Laurie Krauz is a three-time MAC Award-winner and a two-time Bistro Award-winner. Her most recent highly acclaimed show is Tapestry REWOVEN, a jazzy interpretation of the iconic Carole King album Tapestry, which earned her and Daryl Kojak a 2009 Bistro Award.

A multiple Bistro Award-winner, Daryl Kojak has worked on the New York music scene for more than 30 years as a pianist, producer, composer, songwriter, arranger and musical director. In addition to Laurie Krauz, he has performed live or in the recording studio with countless Broadway, film, concert, recording, and cabaret stars, including Kristen Chenoweth, Catherine Russell, Mark Nadler, Sandra Bernhard, Warren Vaché, and Jackie Hoffman.
