Stephen Hanks Presents New York Cabaret's Greatest Hits

Susan Winter: Love Rolls On

Susan Winter had for years been a popular singer at various New York venues, jazz clubs and Catskill Mountain resorts when she took what became a 30-plus year hiatus from performing to raise a family and work with special needs adolescents. But when Winter made her comeback in 2008 as a “debut” performer, she set the New York cabaret world on fire as that year she was nominated for a MAC Award for her show Million Dollar Matinee. She quickly followed that up by winning a 2009 Bistro Award as “Outstanding Vocalist” for her show LOVE ROLLS ON, and a 2010 MAC Award for “Best Recording” of the LIVE CD version of the same show.

Now, eight years after launching LOVE ROLLS ON (originally directed by Lina Koutrakos) at the Metropolitan Room, Winter will reprise her critically acclaimed show featuring classics of the Great American Songbook and future standards by contemporary writers at the same venue in the 13th installment of the celebrated monthly series produced by Stephen Hanks’ NEW YORK CABARET’S GREATEST HITS (Associate Producer Fr. Jeffrey Hamblin, MD). With Rick Jensen as Musical Director on piano and Tom Hubbard on bass, Winter will perform LOVE ROLLS ON on October 7 at 7 pm.

Winter had been inspired to create LOVE ROLLS ON when, after the death of her mother, she found a box of the letters her parents exchanged during World War II. Prominent reviewer David Finkle wrote in Backstage: “[Winter] combines a cheerful mezzo and a solid sense of jazz swing with a great regard for a lyric . . . A fun-loving powerhouse, inviting favorable comparisons to Marilyn Maye. To paraphrase Shakespeare's Richard III, now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this Winter.”

“In Love Rolls On, the intimacy, sadness and joy Winter shared in these songs, together with her capabilities as a storyteller, make for some of the most touching moments of her performance.”
–Sandi Durell, Cabaret Scenes Magazine

Since making her cabaret comeback in 2008, Susan Winter has played in every major club in New York and many around the U.S. and the world. In 2011, Winter was commissioned by the Arlene and Kenneth Kupferberg Holocaust Center at Queensborough Community College to develop a program for their annual fundraiser, a show that became the inspirational Rise Up Singing. Winter has also performed this concert at her alma mater Queens College, off-Broadway at Urban Stages, at the Wildflower Music Festival in Pennsylvania, and at synagogues in the New York metropolitan area. In 2015, Winter garnered her fourth personal MAC Award nomination for her show A Woman For All Seasons. Winter is also co-producer and co-host (with singer Deb Berman) of the twice MAC Award-nominated Open Mic @ The Met, a regular Sunday afternoon singing series at the Metropolitan Room that launched in 2014.
