Learnin' the Blues

Virginia Jimenez (writer, dancer, theater maker and teaching artist) places an emphasis on the experience and importance of emotional education in her work. In this atypical cabaret, she weaves words and music to chronicle her journey to learning that low feeling that we call the blues. The blues, as a genre of music, wouldn’t be what it is without that melancholy feeling. Her favorite songs, personal stories, and original poems carry the woeful voices of the blues: grief, heartache, depression, and loneliness. Despite how slow and heavy the blues can be, she also explores how we can rise from it, how to stay loving and warm in the midst of it, and how much we can learn about ourselves because of it.

She is joined by two lovely and talents musicians:

Matthew Gregory - Music Director/Piano
Matt  is an actor, composer, and musical director. Originally from CT, he moved to New York City to study Musical Theatre at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Post-graduation, he currently works as a music director and teaching artist for TADA! Youth Theater. As an actor, Matt has performed at Radio City, Joe’s Pub, and regional theaters across the country, and he is a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association. His works as a composer include Pajama Sam, a musical adaptation of a popular 90’s point-and-click computer game, and Where the Sidewalk Ends, a song cycle devised from the poems of Shel Silverstein. Matt makes up one half of the country-pop duo Halcyon Days, and he releases music periodically as a solo artist. He is thrilled to be collaborating with Virginia on her first cabaret and to be making his Metropolitan Room debut!

Sean Harkness - Guitar
Sean is a musical Artist and guitarist-for-hire living in the New York City suburb of Jersey City Heights. He composes music for solo guitar and for small ensembles, and he supports many singers, musicians, and theatrical productions. “…gives full expression to the mood of the moment.” -Stephen Holden, New York Times “…a technical virtuoso who’s Joe Pass / Tommy Emmanuel fingerstyle approach is always in service to telling a story or creating a feeling within the song; [Harkness] transcends many genres and can touch listeners of many backgrounds.” -Jazz Inside New York
