LISA JASON: BULLIED TO BEAUTIFUL
Directed by Stephen Hanks
Musical Director: Ryan Shirar

When accomplished concert singer and cabaret performer LISA JASON was a child, her family moved from Long Island, New York to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and the transition would not be a happy one. A self-admitted “ugly duckling,” Lisa endured relentless bullying from other kids—both mental and physical—from early grade school through her high school graduation. While her parents did what they could to ease her pain, Lisa was often depressed and felt alone.

Lisa did have some friends, but they weren’t other kids. They were her collection of 45 rpm records that played the hit songs of the 1970s, and Lisa escaped into a happier place through the music and the singers and songwriters of the era who would become her saviors—Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, The Carpenters, Janis Ian, Meat Loaf, Donna Summer, her hero Barry Manilow (who also grew up as a victim of bullying), and more. Their iconic songs helped Lisa “make it through the rain,” and transform her into the confident, beautiful singing swan she is today.

At a time when bullying is a major problem in American society because social media has become a breeding ground for such behavior, Lisa Jason wants tell her poignant story through the music that she loved throughout her childhood. Through her delightful voice and self-deprecating humor, Lisa hopes her Metropolitan Room debut show, BULLIED TO BEAUTIFUL will be one that audiences not only will identify with, but that will also send a powerful message that bullying needs to be stopped.

Lisa has brought together a stellar band for this show, led by Musical Director/Arranger Ryan Shirar, who most recently garnered great acclaim for his work on the highly praised Maxine Linehan show, “Beautiful Songs.” Lisa and Ryan will be joined by the MAC Award-winning Sean Harkness on guitar, the highly sought-after Mairi Dorman-Phaneuf on cello, and Mike Lunoe on percussion, playing the cajon. The director of BULLIED TO BEAUTIFUL is Stephen Hanks, Owner of Cabaret Life Productions and the Cabaret Section Editor for BroadwayWorld.com, who is making his cabaret-directing debut.

Lisa Jason’s singing has earned rave reviews from Provincetown to New York to the Caribbean. Her latest show, “JUDY GARLAND: THE WISH recently played at 54 Below in New York City, the Cotuit Center for the Arts in Cape Cod, MA, and at the Provincetown Theater in Provincetown, MA. Lisa has performed and recorded with Steely Dan founding member Denny Dias for the past several years, and they have performed sold out shows at the Berklee School of Music in Boston and the Wequassett Jazz festival on Cape Cod in 2014. This past August, Lisa and Denny performed four shows in two nights at New York’s Iridium Jazz Club.

Lisa has also performed with John Morelle from Cyndi Lauper’s band Blue Angel, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and more. She has opened for the original cast of The Jersey Boys, Huey Lewis and the News, KC and The Sunshine Band, Otis Day, The Bonnie Raitt band, John Cafferty, The Hooters, Molly Hatchett, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Lisa has sung at a charity event by special request of Aerosmith’s Stephen Tyler. On the cabaret stage, Lisa has appeared with Jim Caruso and Billy Stritch. Lisa is a favorite at the annual CabaretFest in Provincetown, MA and the Cape Cod Jazz Festival. A multi-faceted artist/songwriter, Lisa has also been a featured singer with the Cape Cod Symphony and performed the National Anthem at Fenway Park.
