Will There Still Be Singing?  A Hanns Eisler Cabaret

Direct from the renowned cabaret series at Cafe Sabarsky in The Neue Galerie, celebrated soprano Karyn Levitt and the Hanns Eisler Trio (accordionist William Schimmel, guitarist Ira Siegel, led by musical director/pianist Eric Ostling) explore and discover the treasures of Austro-German composer Hanns Eisler — Schoenberg’s student, Kurt Weill’s contemporary, and Brecht’s favorite collaborator.

Karyn Levitt
Noted by London Times critic Irving Wardle for allowing Eisler’s songs “to bloom and be beautiful in a way which is undoubtedly musically expressive," Ms. Levitt made her Café Sabarsky debut in March 2016 in her new show, Will There Still Be Singing? A Hanns Eisler Cabaret and her Town Hall debut in December 2015 in Happy Birthday Eric Bentley! A Centennial Tribute Concert for which she sang the world premiere of Songs for Mother Courage by Darius Milhaud and Eric Bentley, under the baton of four-time Emmy winner Glen Roven leading the Metamorphosis Chamber Orchestra.

Karyn Levitt was honored to share the Town Hall stage with Michael Riedel, Tony Kushner, Austin Pendleton, Louise Kerz Hirschfeld, James Shapiro, Edward Mendelson, Phillip Lopate, Roger Copeland, and Michael Paller. Ms. Levitt also performed several Brecht-Eisler songs with the distinguished pianist Eric Ostling, world-renowned accordionist William Schimmel, and Broadway guitarist Larry Saltzman. The centennial tribute concert to Eric Bentley at Town Hall was hailed by critic-composer-playwright Leonard Lehrman as “a triumph for soprano Karyn Levitt, who has worked diligently to bring Bentley’s Brecht translations to life, especially those settings he wrote to music of Hanns Eisler… Full credit to Glen Roven and his Metamorphosis Chamber Orchestra who accompanied Levitt in this convincing score, performed complete for the first time anywhere.” Ms. Levitt looks forward to further performances of Songs for Mother Courage at stages around the world.

Her new album Eric Bentley’s Brecht-Eisler Song Book, recorded by Glen Roven, with pianist Eric Ostling, accordionist William Schimmel, and guitarist Larry Saltzman, was released in January. Distributed by Naxos, it can be purchased on Amazon and wherever CDs are sold. The European release of the album is on August 5th.

With Eric Bentley, Ms. Levitt created Eric Bentley’s Brecht-Eisler Song Book, a concert with spoken word which she has performed with pianist Eric Ostling at Symphony Space, Amherst College, Hunter College, Vassar College, The Olin Center for the Performing Arts at Bates College, USC, and the Goethe Institutes of Boston and Los Angeles. She has also written, produced, and performed her own shows at Carnegie Hall (Weill), Shakespeare & Company, Oberlin College, and a range of cultural and music venues in New England. The project was awarded a major arts grant from Nokia in 2013 and a research grant from the USC Dept. of Exile Studies.

Karyn Levitt is a graduate of Oberlin College, where she earned her B.A. with Honors in English Literature. Her classical voice training began in Boston with Soprano Janice Giampa and continued in New York City with Bass-Baritone William Barto Jones. Her background also includes producing, acting, improvisation, performance coaching, lecturing, and writing.
