Cagebirds (In Our Words Benefit)
About this production...
Despite our current political climate, theatre artists are determined to continue creating art and sharing important stories. Now, more than ever as well, is the time to step forward and support women in the theatre industry and projects about women in the arts.
Our creative team has chosen to take our production of Cagebirds in a very realistic and sobering direction. Our setting will be in a “Center for Troubled Women." The year is 2020, three years into the new presidential administration. The production will explore the narratives of the women in the shelter as they encounter a new addition. We know that this show will have an impact on the community that it serves.
This will be an intentional all-female cast: Immigrants, Muslims, Jews, southern belles, transgender women, curvy women, women of color, and women battling mental illness. Women's issues. Corrupt, manipulative leadership. Fear. Hate. Freedom. It is all packed into this one hour show.
This production will also partner with local organizations that focus on addressing women's issues, including the Network of Victim Assistance (NOVA), Let My People Go (a human trafficking rescue organization), and The Accompany Project (part of The Arab American Association of New York) . A portion of our ticket sales will be donated to these organizations as a part of our team's commitment to equality and freedom in New York City.
Theatre has the power to transform lives. Theatre can challenge the status quo. Theatre can life up voices that are brushed aside in our mainstream social discourse. IN OUR WORDS aspires to present work that elevates narratives forgotten or ignored by broader culture. IN OUR WORDS and the team of Cagebirds recognize that funding for this type of work is sparse, and that much of it will come from friends, family, partnering artists, and people like you. Until we live in a country that supports these artistic endeavors, it is going to be up to us to support local artists who, for the greater good, are taking these risks.
If you feel as we do, that it is our job to elevate the narratives of the oppressed and underrepresented, we invite you to donate to this project. We are the change we seek.
Thanks to supporters like you, our production reached its first financial hurdle. Because of your generosity, we were able to secure our production venue and the rights to the show. Our total financial goal for this production is $15,000. Donations made through IN OUR WORDS are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law. Partner with us today because every dollar counts. Be the change you seek.
