Born in (Jamaica) Queens, New York with a Caribbean and French ancestry yet raised in Houston, Texas Queen Diva’s five octave range voice was classically trained in Prairie View, Texas where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts in Voice with a Minor in Fashion Merchandising & Design at Prairie View A&M University, a part of the Texas A&M University system. She furthered her studies in Music Business-Composition at Rice University Susan M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies. She is a member of ASCAP as a writer and publisher, NY Blues and Jazz Society, National Association for Black Female Executives in Music and Entertainment and a member of The Recording Academy (Grammy’s).

Queen Diva’s voice has been compared to having the look and voice very similar to the Legendary Songstress Phyllis Hyman for many years.  She came up with the idea 12 years ago while listening to Phyllis Hyman’s “As You Are” with Pharoah Sanders to perform a musical tribute to Phyllis Hyman and discuss her favorite songs recorded and performed by her as well as history about Phyllis Hyman and her mental illness that ultimately led her to end her life in 1995. This tribute called “Strength of a Woman: A Phyllis Hyman Tribute” is a celebration of Phyllis Hyman’s music and also closure for many of her “Phans” as they are affectionately called worldwide to understand the pain she was going through with Bipolar Disease all of her life.

“I want to share Phyllis Hyman’s music and love for her fans as well as to give hope and closure to “Phans” who are still mourning her death over 20 years later with uncertainty on why she chose to leave this life the way that she did.” ~Queen Diva

The 60 minute tribute begins with Phyllis Hyman’s days with Duke Ellington’s “Sophisticated Ladies Medley-A Train, It Don’t Mean A Thing, In A Sentimental Mood”to her pivotal vocal performance in Spike Lee’s “School Daze” singing “Be One”  to her recording career beginning with Norman Connors singing “Betcha By Golly Wow” to  her favorite songs “What You Won’t Do For Love,” to “Old Friend” a song she would dedicate to her numerous dear friends who died of AIDS in the 1980’s and early 1990’s to.

Strength of a Woman: A Phyllis Hyman Tribute is sure to make you smile, laugh, cry and hold on to your heart in wonderful memories of a magnificent vocalist who could sing Jazz, Pop, Soul, R&B, Broadway and Anthems! I was so honored to debut “Strength of a Woman: A Phyllis Hyman Tribute Off-Broadway July 6, 2013 at the #1 NYC Jazz and Cabaret Restaurant/Bar The Metropolitan Room.

New York, New York is where she calls home sweet home with her beautiful daughter, Gabrielle NaShanti, who is a sophomore at University of Rochester studying Film Media Studies.
