<![CDATA[Dragaret]]> http://metropolitanroom.com/show.cfm?id=265977&cart&buy Theater in the Now presents Dragaret

The spotlight shines on three emerging drag queens as they celebrate all things theater! A night of song, dance, and a lip sync or three, Dragaret showcases some of New York's most fabulous theater queens. Dragaret will star Bijoux, Cherry Poppins, and Vanna Deux.

Bijoux is a "Material Girl" living in a "Got Her First Credit Card" world, and she is shocked by how much she was approved for. Her favorite worldly possession is a Swarovski-stoned bong, to which she sings sweet lullabies to frequently. Instead of bathing in Chanel No. 5, Bijoux bathes in Ari by Ariana Grande because the rest of her budget needs to go to Popeye's $5.99 Box Deals. Follow her chronicles on Instagram at @Bijoux.XO. She is so thrilled to be making her Dragaret debut with her sisters, and thanks Michael for bringing us all together.

Cherry Poppins is a fiery ginger with a knack for making stupid musical theatre references that hardly anyone will understand. She channels the 90s with a contemporary Broadway (more like Off-Broadway) flair. When she's not performing, she can be seen browsing through old pictures of 90s heartthrobs or singing TLC into her hairbrush. Instagram and Venmo @Cherrypoppinsnyc

Vanna Deux is your new step mom. One time she made your dad buy her tickets to Phantom of the Opera and she made it to "Music of the Night" before she fell asleep because she drank too many pre-show Pinot Grigios at Olive Garden in Times Square. She knows about 30% of the words to "Popular" and she is darn proud of that. She's the Marty to this group of Pink Ladies. She could afford tickets to Hamilton - but it just doesn't appeal to her. Her step daughter taught her how to use Instagram once, but she doesn't care for it. However, her twin brother can be found @kylevanzandt and he loves posting pictures of her tits deep in a flirtini. #DotheDeux

<![CDATA[Dean & Jerry]]> http://metropolitanroom.com/show.cfm?id=260094&cart&buy

ANGELO CAPONE

His music career began at age 7 thanks to the encouragement of his Father and Uncle. What they noticed was his ability to hear sounds and then put those sounds to a beat, leading to Angelo becoming a Drummer. A person asked him, “Are you a drummer or a person that plays Drums?” to which he answered, “I am a drummer because I am able to play all types of music by using different types of percussion instruments.”

"I have been doing Jerry Lewis for over 40 years. I didn't start as an impersonator. I was like him in many ways. I never used this talent to make money, I just did it for fun because everyone wants to be around a guy like Jerry. When I was young, at that time he was known as “Mr. Comedy” and there was no better team then Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis. I loved doing Jerry as a kid and then switched over to the Nutty Professor, because it was easy to bring that character into any situation. I am hoping to keep this amazing comedian alive since no one can do Jerry as well as I can. This has become my own personal tribute to Jerry Lewis."

ROBERT CABELLA

Robert Cabella has been in the business for over 30 years beginning with impersonations of Elvis Presley and others. He is known as “Mr. Hollywood”. He has performed in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, throughout Florida, Europe and Japan. His interest in Dean Martin came from his father who was a huge fan of Dino. He has performed solo, as part of Martin & Lewis and part of an entire Rat Pack Show.

<![CDATA[Debra Cook]]> http://metropolitanroom.com/show.cfm?id=268805&cart&buy "Love Does Not Alter”
A Benefit for Heritage New Works Project
(100% of proceeds to fund Sleepy Hollow, the Musical’s performance at the
New York New Work Festival)

The show is based on Shakespeare’s Sonnet 116,

"Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments,
Love is not love which alters
                  When it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove.
Oh no, it is an ever fixed mark
That looks upon tempests and is never shaken...."

The cabaret investigates how love endures through the many unpredictable and even crazy changes that life brings. These "alterations" may be brought about by age, tempests, tragedy, illness, fame, death, new life, a change in sexuality, even enlightenment.

Some of the songs included are:
      When October Goes (Barry Manilow)
      Your're Still You (Josh Grobin)
      Songs for Naughty Children (Twitchell)
Angel Flying to Close to the Ground (Willie Nelson)
      They All Laughed (Gershwin)
      Starbright (Jim Brickman)
Angels, Punks, and Raging Queens (Janet Hood)

The study and practice of music led him to attend the high school jazz program at New Orleans Center for Creative Arts and then to pursue a degree in music at Stony Brook University. While a working jazz musician in New Orleans, Andrew joined the bandstand with renowned musicians such as Jason Marsalis, Wes "Warmdaddy" Anderson, and Ed "Sweetbread" Peterson. <![CDATA[Aziza Miller]]> http://metropolitanroom.com/show.cfm?id=261503&cart&buy
Aziza Miller knows New York. It's her home. The pulse and the energy of the city manifests in her fusion of funk, jazz, soul, Latin, and spoken word. New York also knows Aziza. Some of the city's most prestigious venues have welcomed her to standing room-only crowds. Whether headlining at Joe’s Pub, The Blue Note, Iridium Jazz Club, The Metropolitan Room, Brooklyn Academy of Music's BAM Café, or any number of other celebrated haunts, Aziza spellbinds audiences with her original compositions as well as her peerless musicianship that has sparked her acclaimed writing collaborations with Natalie Cole ("La Costa"), Ahmad Jamal ("Whisperings," among others), Ray Bryant ("One Fine Day"), Tommy Turrentine ("Big Brown Eyes"), and UK-based DJ Ben Westbeech ("Get Closer"). And it's not only world-class musicians who thrill to Aziza's soulful yet sophisticated melodies, it's a loyal audience that spans the globe and crosses every generation.

Music fans have long anticipated Aziza's latest collection of songs, This Journey of Love (2016). Hailed as a "filler-free winner" (The Urban Music Scene), "a beautiful hybrid of Aziza's jazz leanings and soul phrasings" (Dusty Groove), and "a solid production of top-tier quality jazz/R&B with phat keys skills, fine melodies and hooks, and smart vocals" (The Smooth Jazz Ride), This Journey of Love features Aziza's tributes to Horace Silver ("A Song for Silver"), Natalie Cole ("A Song for My Friend"), and four additional compositions that spotlight Aziza's talents as both composer and musical artisan.

This Journey of Love follows a trio of releases that explored Aziza's unique blend of jazz, soul, and poetry, Jazzsoetry Vol. 1 (2007), Jazzsoetry Vol. 2 (2010), and What's On Your Mind? (2014). However, many listeners first became acquainted with Aziza when she blazed a trail in the 1970s as one of the first female Musical Directors for a major recording artist. Between 1975-1980, she presided as Musical Director, conductor, and pianist for Natalie Cole. During that time, Aziza composed the music for "La Costa," which featured lyrics by Natalie Cole and brought Aziza to the attention of Ahmad Jamal, who not only covered "La Costa" but invited Aziza to write lyrics to four of his original recorded compositions. Formerly known as "Linda Williams," Aziza was offered a contract with Arista Records where she released her first solo album, City Living (1979). Her debut featured the Latin-infused grooves of "Elevate Our Minds," a song that was subsequently sampled by renowned U.K. DJ Ben Westbeech on "Get Closer" (2006).

Beyond her studio projects, Aziza's many talents have flourished everywhere from the Broadway stage to New York's Department of Education. She brought her expertise to the Professional Performing Arts School where Alicia Keys was among her many talented students. In 1997, she received the Presidential Scholar Distinguished Teacher Award from President Bill Clinton. She played in the orchestra for Oprah Winfrey's presentation of The Color Purple and was Musical Director for Rain Pryor's Fried Chicken & Latkes. Throughout her various endeavors, she authored a book called The Divanary: A Dictionary for Divas, which was inspired by her interactive musical piece "Divas Don't Apologize."

In every note she writes, plays, and sings, it's very clear: Aziza has many more trails to blaze.

<![CDATA[Lee Squared: An Evening with Liberace and Miss Peggy Lee]]> http://metropolitanroom.com/show.cfm?id=267172&cart&buy
WRITTEN BY David Maiocco and Chuck Sweeney

Liberace lived a life of flamboyance, sparkle, and lavish costumes. In this funny and touching tribute, the virtuoso musician gets one last chance to glitter and shine as he tickles the ivories through his favorite songs. New York City favorite, and Connecticut native, David Maiocco will reprise his iconic performance as the man who defined four decades of music and pop culture.

DAVID MAIOCCO
David Maiocco has traveled globally playing for some of the most iconic legends of all times – or at least, reasonable facsimiles! For 14 years, he played the piano and the role of Mort Lindsay in Judy Garland Live! starring Tommy Femia in dozens of U.S cities including New York, San Francisco, Chicago, as well as London, England. David has served as musical director and pianist for Chuck Sweeney as Miss Peggy Lee, James Beaman’s Marlene Dietrich Live at The Café Du Paris, and Black Market Marlene in New York, New Orleans, San Francisco, Munich and Berlin, Germany – Steven Brinberg’s Simply Barbra – Carol Channing and Friends with Richard Skipper – James Beaman’s Lauren Bacall at Don’t Tell Mama. Off Broadway - orchestrator, musical director, and conductor for “I Will Come Back!” by Timothy Gray and Hugh Martin at The Players Theatre. Classical piano studies with Burton Hatheway of Fairfield, CT; Alfred E. Lee and Jung Ja Kim; Boston Conservatory, and Gabriel Chodos; Aspen Music Festival. In cabaret concerts and guest spots, David has had the pleasure of playing for artists such as Ben Vereen, John Barrowman, Karen Mason, Pamela Myers, Christine Pedi, Sidney Myer, among others. His Cabaret work earned him the 2000 Backstage Magazine Bistro Award for Outstanding Achievement in Musical Direction as well as the 2002 MAC Award for Best Musical Director.

A gifted pianist, he makes that piano sound like the Philharmonic!" - John Hoglund Back Stage Magazine.

"The production values are first rate, notably the musical direction of David Maiocco" - Karl Levett Backstage Magazine

"David, who appeared quite unexpectedly on the New York cabaret scene has certainly made his mark in the Big Apple" - Stu Hamstra Cabaret Hotine

David K. Maiocco plays sometimes pounding, sometimes subtle arrangements on a baby grand piano that often sound like a fuller orchestra" - Sarasota Herald Tribune

"musical director/arranger David Maiocco has combined Bricusse's songs together with winning flair!" - Scott and Barbara Siegel - Theatermania

CHUCK SWEENEY
Chuck Sweeney has been dazzling audiences with his delightfully offcenter comedic tribute to the legendary Miss Peggy Lee since 19—. Let’s just say, for a LONG, long time. It all started in his living room imitating “The Wizard of Oz”, “The Sound of Music” and all of the guests on the Mike Douglas and Merv Griffin shows. From the legendary Madeira Room at The Pilgrim House in Provincetown to The Waldorf Astoria Grand Ballroom, Chuck has been fortunate enough to perform in some of the most well known cabarets and theaters in the U.S. and Canada. His repertoire of comic impressions include Judy Garland, Bette Davis, Eartha Kitt, Tina Turner, Phyllis Diller, Liza, Joan Rivers, Cher As “Miss Lee” he has performed in just about every cabaret in NYC (Don’t Tell Mama, The Duplex, Symphony Space, Friars Club, Madison Square Garden to name a few) and participated in too many comedy shows to list here. He was honored to be a featured Guest Star and Host(ess) at The “Just For Laughs” Montreal Comedy Festival Queer Comics Night. He is a recipient of the Backstage Bistro Award and a two-time M.A.C. Award Winner for Outstanding Impersonation under the Musical Direction of David Maiocco. Chuck is extremely happy and excited to share the stage with David/ Liberace in “Lee Squared”. Thank you for including me in the fun Maestro!

“Chuck has pegged the unique vocal characteristics of his alter ego to a tee…His act is a winner!” – Keith Meritz, Cabaret Scenes

“A Tantalizing Take on Miss Peggy Lee. Sweeney, a dead ringer for Lee in appearance, voice, mannerisms and delivery, Chuck is a consummate performer who has studied Lee’s style with acute insight”- David Hurst, Show Business Weekly

NYC album release show for singer and songwriter Kate Bass's fully crowd-funded second full album, "Songs of the Open Road." She will be joined by LA-based jazz pianist and composer Cathlene Pineda in an acoustic cabaret performance of songs from the album, a jazz and folk influenced multi-genre work inspired by Walt Whitman's poem "Song of the Open Road" and written over the course of a cross-country road trip from New York to LA.

Kate Bass, based in NYC and LA and originally from Anchorage, Alaska, performs extensively across the country in many varying musical genres. She made her principal Off-Broadway New York City Center debut as Josephine in H.M.S. Pinafore and continues to tour nationally in the role for the past 4 years with the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players. She appeared recently as Princess Ida in Princess Ida at the Skirball Center, and as the Musical Guest for 24 Hour Plays Off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theater Company. She appeared twice at Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center; both as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Case Scaglione, and in the Emmy-nominated production of Carousel, televised on PBS’s “Live at Lincoln Center.” In recent years, she has sung at Carnegie Hall (Der Vampyr, The Messiah, Verdi’s Requiem, Elijah), Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center (La Farsa Amarosa), and has performed in recital at the 92nd Street Y, The Austrian Cultural Forum, and the Museum of the City of New York, among others. She has performed in cabaret at the Metropolitan Room and (le) poisson rouge in New York, and at the Rockwell, the Hotel Café, and the Regent Theater in Los Angeles. Cathlene Pineda is a sought after pianist and composer known for her "beautifully intimate and heartfelt music" (Ralph Alessi, SIM) . In January 2016, Orenda Records released Cathlene's second album of original music, "Passing: A California Suite." "Airy, elegant and haunting" (Cesareo Garasa, The Californian), this album was originally a piece commissioned by the Los Angeles Jazz Society and premiered at the Angel City Jazz Festival at the REDCAT theater. It is a suite of music based off of the work of Los Angeles' first Poet-Laureate, Eloise Klein-Healy, and incorporates the poetry throughout the piece, with an "open atmosphere that hints at the complex beauty of the city" (Lee Epstein, freejazzblog.org). Highlights of her recent projects include an ongoing collaboration with the Big Show Dance Company (premiered in October 2015 and again in February 2017) to incorporate original compositions with recorded memories, a commission by the Oakwood school for a collaborative dance and choral piece, and a commission to compose a piece for the Jane Goodall Institute, as well as her featured compositions in the critically-acclaimed film, "Jason Nash is Married," produced by Comedy Central Studios. As a performer, Cathlene has worked with an extensive list of notable musicians and composers, including: Charlie Haden, Bobby Bradford, Ab Baars (From the ICP), Art Lande, Dave Douglas, Ralph Alessi, Wadada Leo Smith, Albert “Tootie” Heath, Kris Tiner, Vinny Golia, Mark Miller, and Joe LaBarbara. http://www.cathlenepineda.com

“Every Day Blues”
A new-breed vocalist who infuses diversity and modern interpretation into his jazz and blues show, John Minnock first gained popularity in Boston and is now a resident performer at the Metropolitan Room. He is the recipient of the “HotHouse Jazz 2016 Fans Decision Metropolitan Room Award”, and recently released his debut album “Every Day Blues” (available at iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, and CDBaby).

An audience favorite rapidly building a large New York following, John combines great originality, musicality and showmanship with clever wit and irreverent comedy, presenting a high-energy and entertaining evening of jazz, blues, funk and R&B. “Like the best Irish coffee, Minnock’s voice is smooth and bold, with a good dose of Bushmills to give it a smoldering kick…stellar chops…creative phrasing; impressive scatting” (Kevin Scott Hall, Bistro Awards).

A classically trained musician, John’s vocalizing recalls the likes of Billy Eckstein, Lou Rawls, George Benson and B.B. King. He often branches out into jazz improvisation and scat singing, and brings a rich history of the music to every performance. His wide repertoire of song renditions spans classic artists like King, Ruth Brown and Bill Withers to contemporaries such as Sara Bareilles, Amy Winehouse and Sam Smith. “One of the best versions of ‘On Broadway’ I’ve ever heard.” (Bistro Awards).

John leads a trio of accomplished musicians and keeps the energy moving throughout the evening. Before bringing his show to NYC, John performed weekly at Boston’s Encore Lounge, in one of the most successful jazz gigs in Boston. The show was chosen as a “Featured Event” by The Boston Globe several times during its run. Previously, John performed in the group “Feed the Meter” and in performances at Acton Jazz Café. Born and raised in Albany, he has a degree in music from Boston University. “…an impressive vocalist, obviously well trained and practiced in his chosen fields of study.” (Bistro Awards).

Don’t miss this great evening of entertainment!

It’s been a 35 year enjoyable and successful run with The Bobs, thousands of live shows, hundreds of original songs, and some 16 albums recorded. My thanks and appreciation to all the members of the various iterations of the group: Gunnar, Matthew, Janie, Joe, Lori, Amy, Dan and Angie. My enormous thanks also to all the folks who have come to our concerts and purchased our recorded music.

We’ve decided to stop touring and concentrate on our various individual efforts in music. But first, there will be a year or so of “farewell” concerts. After Christmas this year we’ll do two shows at the Triple Door in Seattle and a show in Gig Harbor at Morso. We’re looking at dates in the Bay Area, The DC area, Chicago, and the Northeast. We do have a concert booked for next September in North Carolina.

Why now? You might ask. It’s mostly because of location and logistics. The current line up will be spread across the US as of next spring; Matthew in Seattle, Dan in Minneapolis/St Paul, Angie in San Francisco and Richard in Virginia. Even the Bobs might need to rehearse occasionally…….That said, as dates get booked we’ll be sure to let all of y’all know about our upcoming schedule.

The show features German cabaret songs, French chansons, klezmer and Hebrew music, American Songbook favorites, as well as beloved Broadway show tunes sung in five different languages, moderated in English. <![CDATA[Lizzie Sider & Friends]]> http://metropolitanroom.com/show.cfm?id=268086&cart&buy

Lizzie Sider is a Top 40 recording artist and the nation’s leading teen anti-bullying activist. Come hear a variety of music and stories, including Lizzie’s favorite country-pop originals, classic favorites, jazz and contemporary standards, and music from Lizzie’s featured guests.

ABOUT LIZZIE:

Born and raised in Boca Raton, Florida, Lizzie Sider is an American singer/songwriter, recording artist, actress, dancer, and Founder of the bully prevention non-profit organization, “Nobody Has The Power To Ruin Your Day”.

At the age of 13, Lizzie took her guitar and her dream (and her parents, of course) to the famed Music City, and embarked on a journey to make her vision a reality. Climbing fast, that same year, Lizzie wrote with renowned artist and songwriter Jamie O’Neal, lyricist Lisa Drew (Martina McBride, Emerson Drive) and Jimmy Murphy. Together, they knocked out an upbeat, driving single called “Butterfly,” which grew some wings of its own. In 2011, “Butterfly” was released as Lizzie’s debut single, gaining significant radio play and charting in the Top 40 on the Music Row Country Chart. It’s behind-the-scenes, in-studio music video for “Butterfly” has received over one million views on YouTube.

Lizzie went on to open for Jamie O’Neal, Gloriana and Aaron Tippin, and also to perform multiple songs with Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul and Mary) at the Crest Theatre in Delray Beach, FL. She has performed on many Nashville stages, including the infamous Bluebird Cafe, Hard Rock Cafe, Bridgestone Arena, and City Winery. Lizzie has traveled nationally with her music career, for both live performances and television features in shows such as The Queen Latifah Show, Crook & Chase, The Better Show, Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood, and Hallmark’s Home and Family. She has been a guest on popular nationally syndicated radio shows, including the Marilu Henner Show and Fox News Radio. In addition, Lizzie has wholeheartedly given over 20 performances of our national anthem for the Nashville Predators, Miami Marlins, Florida Panthers, Baltimore Orioles, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Boston Red Sox.

Unsurprisingly, Lizzie’s theatre roots still remain close to her, and the work she does in theatre has so far remained at the place she has known her whole life: the Jackson Hole Playhouse in quaint Jackson Hole, Wyoming. In the 2015 summer season, she played Martha in “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” and most recently, she closed out the 2016 summer season as Cat Ballou in the original musical adaptation of “The Ballad of Cat Ballou.”

Playing piano has been a major piece of Lizzie since the age of six, so naturally, an easy way to her soul is through the keys. Lizzie’s second single, a powerful piano ballad, “I Love You That Much” (music and lyrics by Joe Vulpis), also charted in the Top 40 on the Music Row Chart. Lizzie’s music video for the song was directed by the late, legendary director Steven Goldmann (Alan Jackson, Martina McBride, Shania Twain) in the beautiful Los Angeles Union Station, and has more than 100K YouTube views. “I Love You That Much” being the exception, Lizzie writes all of her own music, and released a 6-song EP titled “Symphony” in 2015, produced by James Stroud. In 2016, her original song, “Summer Love Song” was featured as the opening track of the Hallmark Original Movie, “A Time To Dance,” starring Jennie Garth and Corbin Bernsen.

Lizzie has been named one of CMA Close-Up Magazine’s “Artists To Watch” and a “Top 5 Female Country Newcomer.” She has also been awarded an HMMA (Hollywood Music in Media Award) for “Butterfly,” and the HateBrakers organization honored her work in bully prevention with the Peter Yarrow HateBraker Hero Award.

Advocating for positive causes is a cornerstone in Lizzie’s life, both personally and professionally. She is a spokesperson for GWEN (Global Women’s Empowerment Network) and PACER (National Bullying Prevention Center), and because she feels an immense connection to young children, she has performed at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, the Ronald McDonald House and the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Perhaps Lizzie’s most personal endeavor is her work in the bully prevention space. When she was a child in elementary school, Lizzie was bullied by a relentless group of girls in her grade. It would send her to tears every day, and ultimately left her feeling defeated. Her father’s phrase of “Nobody has the power to ruin your day” resonated with her so deeply that several years later, in 2013, she decided to embark on her National Bully Prevention School Tour of the same name. Lizzie created her own 30 minute Bully Prevention Assembly, geared towards elementary and middle school children, which tells her personal story and combines positivity, encouragement, music, and a relatable message. She has personally performed at roughly 400 schools nationwide, and continues to present her live assemblies in schools. Her newest project, a free Bully Prevention Video Package, is ever-growing in popularity and as of January 2017, is being used in 3,600 schools, representing about 2.4 million children worldwide. All of Lizzie’s bully prevention work goes through Nobody Has The Power To Ruin Your Day, a non-profit organization that she founded in 2014.

A very appealing singer with a warm voice and the ability to express the hidden beauty found in superior lyrics, Maria Guida recently recorded her debut CD, Soul Eyes. Throughout this impressive and highly enjoyable set, the beauty of Maria’s voice is equaled by her understanding of the words and the creative spirit of her musicians. In fact, there was such an immediate communication between all of the participants that Soul Eyes was recorded in its entirety in one day.

“I was blessed with some of the best musicians around,” recalls Maria, “and they made it easy, fun and relaxed. I love pianist James Weidman’s playing. He’s very lyrical, his harmonic sense is beautiful, and he plays wonderful ideas that inspire and support my singing. I’ve known bassist Dean Johnson for 20 years, and this is the first time we’ve ever played together. I love his full, rich tone – and his solos are always beautiful and often capture a spirit of fun. Drummer Tony Moreno and I did a couple of gigs together over the years, and I’ve always loved his tasteful playing. He puts a lot of fire and excitement into the music and, at the same time, his drumming is very sensitive with singers. Ron Horton is a phenomenal trumpeter and flugelhorn player. I love his soulful sound, his musical ideas, and his emotional intensity. I am so thrilled that they are all on this CD.”

While most of the standards on Soul Eyes are familiar, these versions are unique. “It was very important to include a bit of myself and my take on the world, because so many people have recorded standards. I wanted to create a CD that brings these beautiful tunes to life in a way that was a bit different from the way other people have done them, with my point of view.” Certainly this version of the opening “How Little We Know” differs from previous renditions. It is given a gentle interpretation as Maria sings about the mystery of love, and it becomes quite touching near its end when the tempo slows down.
“The thing I love about ‘Inside A Silent Tear’, a beautiful song written by Blossom Dearie, is how it allows the message to shine. Love can be tearful and love can be sad. We sometimes make wrong choices in love, but the feeling behind this tune keeps it from being depressing. It’s a very truthful song.” Maria digs so deep into the lyrics that eventually the words are not even necessary to express her feelings and she sings wordlessly for a chorus. Ron Horton’s flugelhorn blends beautifully with her in several spots.

The next two songs pay tribute to John Coltrane. On “Bessie’s Blues”, Maria sings Coltrane’s memorable solo in addition to the melody. The most famous version of Mal Waldron’s “Soul Eyes” was recorded by Coltrane in 1962. “I have always been very moved by the beauty of this song. I was surprised to discover that, in addition to the gorgeous melody, Mal Waldron also wrote the lyrics.”

“Let’s Get Lost” is closely identified with Chet Baker and is given a joyful, swinging and carefree rendition. “I really love Chet Baker and I used to memorize a lot of his solos. This song always brings a smile to my face.” Also quite happy is “East Of The Sun”, which is described by Maria as “a beautiful picture of an ideal situation.”
On “Spring Is Here”, Maria perfectly balances the sadness of not being loved with the happiness generated by the arrival of spring. In addition to its opening theme, “The Way You Look Tonight” was given a new set of lyrics and a fresh melody composed by Maria that fits in with the vintage piece’s original plot. “Jay Clayton suggested that I sing ‘The Night We Called It a Day’. I love its play on words and the way that it expresses feelings through visions of nature.” This heartfelt version really shows off the beauty of Maria’s voice.
The singer’s playful side is displayed on “No Moon At All”, which (with its sly wit) hints at what could happen in the darkness of the night when no moon is shining. Maria sings Miles Davis’ solo with Jon Hendricks’ lyrics on “Four”. A quietly emotional version of Billy Strayhorn’s “A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing”, taken as a duet with Weidman’s piano, serves as a perfect close for Soul Eyes.

Maria Guida grew up on Long Island. As a child, she heard her parents’ opera, pop, and musical theater records and her mother singing American popular songs around the house. Growing up, Maria played violin for eleven years with a string quartet and all-state orchestra and sang solos in a chorus. She then chose a career in the theater and trained as an actor (with Olympia Dukakis as one of her mentors/teachers). Over a fifteen year period, Maria acted on Broadway and television, was featured in plays by Shakespeare, Chekhov and Tennessee Williams, worked in new productions, had roles in soap operas, and did TV commercials. “I was fortunate to work on stage with many wonderful actors, including Kevin Kline and Estelle Parsons, and to be directed by James Earl Jones and Tom O'Horgan.” She was also cast by Joseph Papp for the New York Shakespeare Festival’s Shakespeare in the Park.

The turning point of her professional life occurred when she saw pianist Bill Evans play live. “Once I got hooked on jazz, I became passionate about singing this music. I started listening to Charlie Parker, Chet Baker, Miles Davis, Lester Young, and Charlie Mingus.” Very important in Maria’s career were the lessons that she received from singers Jay Clayton, Sheila Jordan, and Janet Lawson. “Jay Clayton, who is a real innovator and was my first teacher, gave me the courage to be as inventive as I can be. She’s helped me to see that there are no sounds that are off limits. And it is impossible to overemphasize the impact that Sheila Jordan had on my singing. She opened my ears and helped me get in touch with how to bring myself to any given song. Honesty is first and foremost; music and lyrics are a way into the soul. And Janet Lawson was another generous teacher who helped me with harmony and other aspects of singing this music.”
Over the years, Maria has sung in many clubs with such top musicians as pianists Bruce Barth, Kenny Werner, and Pete Malinverni; bassists Essiet Essiet, Cameron Brown and Ed Schuller; drummers Ron Vincent and Tom Rainey -- as well as the musicians featured on Soul Eyes. She has also performed on stage with acclaimed singers, including Linda Ronstadt and Maureen McGovern.

Maria Guida looks forward to the future with enthusiasm. “I have been expanding my repertoire and my sound, becoming a more explorative singer, and searching for the core meaning of each song. I am very interested in the musical interplay between the instrumentalists and myself, and want to keep expanding as a singer. I love the songs that I’ve recorded and hope that listeners will have as much joy when they hear these songs as I have when I sing them. I am very grateful for the opportunity to sing this music.”
The release of Soul Eyes promises to raise the visibility of Maria Guida in the jazz world, making it possible for many new fans to discover the beauty, sincerity, and joy of her singing.

New York is, and always has been, a study in contrasts when it comes to the jazz it presents. The Big Apple has a reputation as the place to be for those looking to hear, explore and partake in all that's modern in this music, but it also plays home to certain venues that serve as the last vestiges of old world style. Chief among the rooms that traffic in the charm and class associated with cabaret performers, Cole Porter songs and cocktails is the Cafe Carlyle, and few who enter this hallowed space are immune to its charm.

Vocalist/composer Jack Phillips fell under its sway long ago and found inspiration in what he heard there. Phillips, who typically works in pop and rock situations, made it a point to go to the Carlyle to check out the late Bobby Short's performances and, in more recent times, the Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band, and these listening experiences proved to be transformative. Short's work was the impetus behind Phillips' decision to take the plunge into cabaret territory and Davis serves as his arranger, producer, guitar-and-banjo wielding accompanist, occasional songwriting partner and style guide.

While most rock-associated artists looking to cross into cabaret-style territory do so with a safety net of songs from the like of Porter, Gershwin, and Rodgers and Hart in hand, Phillips took the riskier approach and wrote all of the music for Cafe Nights In New York; in some places, this gambit pays off. The absorbing and refined "Someone" and the NOLA-glazed "The Old Grey Hat" are chief among his successes. Elsewhere, the material can be a bit contrived, lyrically speaking ("Magic"), or somewhat forgettable ("Sometimes It Happens") but, on the whole, Phillips proves to be a strong writer capable of conjuring thoughts of a time long gone and a city worth savoring.

Stylistic authenticity is chief among the strong suits of this music and much credit should go to Davis and the other players on board. Multi-instrumental virtuoso Scott Robinson is superb, whether delivering breathtaking tenor saxophone soloing ("Someone") or obbligato on flute or cornet, Conal Fowkes dresses up the music with all manner of sounds, ranging from pianistic class to vibraphone work to string sweetening, and Dan Levinson's clarinet brightens up the atmosphere on "The Old Grey Hat."

Phillips plays his part of old-school cabaret charmer to a T. While he isn't endowed with a voice like Short's and he occasionally pushes a bit too hard, he knows his strengths and limitations well and finds firm footing during the majority of this date. His first foray into the swanky fineries of upper crust musical living features plenty to enjoy.

Music by The Barry Levitt Quartet

Charlie Romo is the newest sensation. Catch him if you can!

Ronnie Zito - Drummer for Bobby Darin
Boots Maleson - Bassist
Jack Cavari - Guitarist for Frank Sinatra

Charlie Romo is a native New Yorker and grew up in a community and family with strong character which has reinforced in him a style that has served him on stage. He studied music at Wagner College and has performed on the same stage and shows with Usher, Lee Roy Reams, Chita Rivera, and Ben Vereen at both The Friars Club and the Internationally acclaimed Metropolitan Room in NYC.

Charlie is in his 20s and yet totally confident, comfortable and at home on both small and very large stages. His captivating body language, radiant smile, personal warmth and pitch-perfect technical mastery reveals his fresh, new, exciting talent that profoundly engages, energizes and mesmerizes his audience at every show. Charlie has an avid passion for, and a unique interpretation of recognizable renditions of popular standards from the 1950s and 1960s. He revives this music and style of a previous era in a dynamic and refreshing way. With intense excitement and enthusiasm, Charlie has a way of turning back the clock, without imitation, and like a kindred spirit, he embodies and channels the soul and sound of these cherished legends, the likes of Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Elvis Presley, Dean Martin, and Bing Crosby. Typically, his audiences respond in a wildly enthusiastic fashion as he brings back the romance, flair, subtlety, and the longing of the music that played through a smoky, satiny generation of courtship, club-going and dancing.

Charlie Romo is backed up by The Barry Levitt Quartet, world-class musicians including Barry Levitt, Charlie's Music Director. Barry Levitt has worked with dozens of top artists including Eartha Kitt, Judy Collins, and Ben Vereen. Bobby Darin, at the Copa in 1960 and Charlie Romo of today are both accompanied by Ronnie Zito on drums. Jeff Carney on bass played for Barbra Streisand and Jack Cavari on guitar had the honor of performing with Frank Sinatra.

REVIEWS:

"This young man is a natural entertainer - by personality and practice. His voice is powerful and solid, the pace was crisp and the energy was high." ~ Fred Cohen, WomenAroundTown.com

"When I heard the opening notes of “Beyond the Sea,” I closed my eyes and found myself in a dream: I was hearing Bobby Darin live. Brilliance that touches the soul can, apparently, result in tears of joy. Take note that this was the reaction of someone who is fiercely protective of her precious songs. Charlie Romo does something entirely different: he turns back the clock. He doesn’t imitate. He embodies. He doesn’t perform “as.” He “is.” In fact, Charlie is a kindred spirit among the performers he adores." ~ Lisa Joy Reitman-Dob, Theater Pizzazz

"He not only melts the hardest of hearts with his endearing, boyish smile, but when the crooner belts out a tune, his engaging, mellow tones not only impress — but bring his audience back to the big band era, when the epitome of romance and sophistication was running rampant and ballroom dancing was all the rage." ~ Carol Ann Benanti, Staten Island Advance

"Charlie Romo's unique and recognizable renditions of popular standards are all audience pleasers. His captivating body language and pitch-perfect technical brilliance reveal he is a fresh, new, exciting talent we feel honored to have seen perform at the very beginning of what promises to be a long and successful career." ~ Thomas Robert Stevens, Applause! Applause!

Charlie Romo is a precocious high-flyer who is ready to rocket you to the moon. ~ Bernie Furshpan, Metropolitan Room, Owner

This series at The Metropolitan Room, hosted by songwriter, performer, producer, Bobbie Horowitz, intends to open America’s eyes to the fact that every age can be filled with vitality. People over age 50 are still cookin’! Teens, 20, 30 & 40 year olds come on in to see great performers & learn you don't have to fear getting older. It's just a number!

In each show Bobbie will honor a person age 50, 60, 70 or beyond who has begun a new career, pick up an old career they gave up on, took on a new undertaking, gone back to school to learn a new skill, etc.

In 2015, those aged 50 and older represent 45% of the U.S. population – and the number will continue to grow! Many seniors and Boomers can and want to do more than merely order Health Alerts and we’re showing them they can!

The “high energy”, award winning spectacular created by Chanteuse Internationale Adrienne Haan, is an unforgettable musical voyage. It takes the audience from the decadent and free-spirited era of 1920s Weimar Berlin - the birthplace of cabaret - through the Ghetto of Warsaw, to the sexy bars of 1950s Paris to the smoky jazz clubs and theatre mile of New York’s Broadway. The show features German cabaret songs, French chansons, klezmer and Hebrew music, American Songbook favorites, as well as beloved Broadway show tunes sung in five different languages, moderated in English. Come and celebrate this show with Adrienne Haan, this time at the Triad Theatre.

With Richard Danley on piano and Mike Campenni on drums.

Over the course of the last century, very little recognition has been given to the women who have composed Broadway bound shows. Inspired by their stories, Songstress celebrates their music. This small-scale concert musical explores these composers from various epochs and with a variety of musical theatre styles (Kay Swift to Jeanine Tesori).

............................................................................

PAUL BINDER — street juggler, talent booker for Merv Griffin, floor manager for Julia Child, Sesame Street regular, and founder of the Big Apple Circus—has lived and worked with the finest circus artists from around the globe. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Paul trained with the San Francisco Mime Troupe before travelling across Europe with Michael Christensen as street jugglers. He returned to New York with the dream to create a theatrically excellent, yet artistically intimate American circus, and in 1977, the Big Apple Circus was born. In July of 2009, Paul stepped out of the ring, but he continues to work with the Big Apple Circus as a senior advisor. The New York Landmarks Conservancy has designated him a “Living Landmark.” Paul recently published his memoir Never Quote the Weather to a Sea Lion and Other Uncommon Tales from the Founder of the Big Apple Circus, with a foreword by Glenn Close. Paul’s first singing triumph was performing as Mitt Romney’s Dog in the Thalia Follies at Symphony Space in 2008. For more information, visit PaulBinderCircus.com.

Lina Orfanos returns to the Metropolitan Room with a new centennial celebration of our great American treasure Ella Fitzgerald. This exciting homage captures the rhythms, the aliveness, the joy of Lady Ella, and the songs she sang. In 2015, Lina and her New York City jazz crew released the sublime album Essentially Ella. This year, they have created an new exhilarating show for fans and fans to be. "Orfanos is a true vocalist. She has a full-bodied, ladylike, fluid soprano. I would even go as far as to call her the "bel canto songstress of cabaret" because of her legato lines and pretty sound. She is a find. She is akin to Ella in the sugary texture of her sound, which is the essence of both Orfanos' and Fitzgerald's vocal personalities...

A gorgeous vocal instrument ... Her ethereal sound and exquisite attention to detail had me dancing in my seat and tearing up at the same time... A highly stylized jazz singer with one of the best bands I have ever heard... She sings from her soul" - New York Cabaret Today

Lina's Jazz Quartet: John Benitez, acoustic bass, Spiros Exaras, guitar,Richie Morales, drums, and Gary Schreiner on piano, accordion & harmonica. Musical Director and Arrangments: Spiros Exaras

Rebecca Holtz has electrified audiences coast to coast since discovering a
love for jazz music. Blessed with a big sound and matching personality
audiences are drawn in by her stage presence, “Whatever ‘it’ is – she has
it.”

From 2011-2014 she was the feature vocalist with the Compaq Big Band
swing orchestra performing in and around the New England area. Matching
her in volume and brass the Compaq Big Band provided Rebecca with the
opportunity to reach a wider audience and try out the swing world. She
acquired a taste for big band jazz that will never be satisfied and in the past
year has appeared regularly with the Monday Night Band at SFJAZZ.

In the fall of 2015 Rebecca released a 5-track EP titled “Take Me There”
featuring a selection of original tunes and standards.

Since the release of “Take Me There” Rebecca has appeared at the Starline
Social Club in Oakland for their jazz series and regularly performs with Bay
Area a cappella sensation Side Note.

<![CDATA[Metropolitan Room Will Have a New Home in 2018]]> http://metropolitanroom.com/show.cfm?id=267143&cart&buy
Dear Friends of Metropolitan Room,

We have a bit of news that we’d like to share with you. Last year, we started looking for another space that will offer more to our artists and fans. The process of venue hunting has been long because of our high standards with finding the right place for our venue. We’ve been looking for a space that offers room for at least two showrooms, a restaurant and piano bar. We located our new home on W. 29th Street and have been in negotiations and hope to be signing a lease and in construction in the very near future.

The Metropolitan Room is a cultural icon in NYC and you were all part of that and we want to continue its legacy for many years to come. Our new space will be one of the best venues in NYC and will attract music lovers from around the world. We’re excited about our move and thank all of you who’ve supported our organization over the years.

Because we’ll need to move from our present location, we’ll be continuing presenting shows at our temporary home, The Triad Theatre on West 72 Street.

Please look at our website, metropolitanroom.com for additional announcements and information.

Sincerely,

Bernie Furshpan, Peter Leavy, Joanne Furshpan, Tom Gamblin, Joseph Macchia
