HEDDA LETTUCE HOSTS “NEW YORK’S NEXT TOP DRAG QUEEN CONTEST" AT THE METROPOLITAN ROOM BEGINNING APRIL 1
JUDGES WILL CROWN BEST SINGER-ENTERTAINER
The sparkles will be flying this spring as the Metropolitan Room hosts its first “New York’s Next Top Drag Queen Contest." The six-week affair, running five Mondays from April 1 to May 6 (no show on April 8), will pit eight pre-selected drag queen artists who will be judged not by looks alone but by how well they sing and entertain.
Hosted by the incomparable Hedda Lettuce, the highly competitive competition will feature a parade of treats for the eyes, special guests, surprise guest judges and a mystery judge whose identity will hopefully be revealed at the contest’s over-the-top finale. The contest’s first Top Drag Queen, who will be showered with gifts and fawned over for years to come, will be held under a highly binding contract by the Metropolitan Room, during which time she will be forced to headline monthly shows from June to December produced by the club.
Competing bust to bust will be these promising entertainers, all of whom have been rigorously pre-screened:
Goldie Fische (a.k.a. Gerry Mastrolia)
Titania Steele (a.k.a. Danny Marr)
Bootsie Lafaris (a.k.a. Justin Keller)
Ninna Rubi (a.k.a. Ricky Reyes)
Millie Grams (a.k.a. Sam Given)
Sonja Brooks (a.k.a. Ben Christopher Marshell)
Didi Panache (a.k.a. Douglas McGeouch)
Candy Samples (a.k.a. WIll Harrell)
Rev Yolanda (a.k.a. Roger Mapes)
“New York’s Next Top Drag Queen” is produced by the Metropolitan Room, Joseph Macchia and Michelle Buttigieg. The contest’s permanent judges include the MAC and Bistro award-winning cabaret producer Joseph Macchia (“Cabaret Cares” and “Broadway on 22nd Street” and “Boys Night Out”), the Broadway veteran and cabaret star T. Oliver Reid (winner 2011 MetroStar; 2012 MAC debut, and 2013 Bistro), and Frankie C. (columnist for Odyssey Magazine). The Mystery Judge will remain "closeted" until the very end. A Metropolitan Room heddliner, Hedda Lettuce stars in the annual holiday classic “Lettuce Rejoice,” all over TV, and, elsewhere on “The Hedda Lettuce Show,” and “The Dixie Chicks with Dicks.”
The elimination rounds are as follows: April 1 and 15 (8 first-round contestants perform two new songs each week); April 22 (6 semifinalists present mini sets, offering a glimpse of what a full show will be); April 29 (4 finalists sing a new song, a repeat song and a theme song); May 6 finale (the 4 finialists sing a new song and make a heartfelt appeal for why they deserve to wear the crown; the finale features several special guests). All shows are Mondays at 7pm.
