INNOVATIVE CONCERT “SOUL TO SOUL” EXPLORES THE COMMONALITIES BETWEEN BLACK AND JEWISH FOLK MUSIC TRADITIONS

NATIONAL YIDDISH THEATRE – FOLKSBIENE HONORS MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

An innovative concertthat explores the shared musical traditions of the African-American and Jewish people, "Soul to Soul" features a distinguished interracial cast.

The Israeli-bornsinger/songwriter and trumpet player Magda Fishman, opera and Broadway’s Elmore James and the actor Tony Perry are backedby a four-piece klezmer-jazz band led by the internationally recognized conductor and Yiddish music authority Zalmen Mlotek.

Created by Mlotek and presented by the National Yiddish Theatre –Folksbiene, in association with The Workmen’s Circle, this special “Soul toSoul” performance commemorates the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.  It also kicks off a series of music and educational events through the winter.

Among the plans are aweek of concerts in the days before Passover, as well as a music symposium centered on the theme of slavery and the ways spiritual and folk music have historically responded to oppression and persecution.

Co-sponsored by TheWorkmen's Circle/Arbiter Ring, with leadership support generously provided by Paul Bernstein.
