“Yip Harburg: With Humor and Hope”

The lyricist for The Wizard of Oz, Finian’s Rainbow and so many movies and Broadway musicals, E.Y. “Yip” Harburg has been called Broadway’s social conscience.  This show highlights many of his songs of social comment – songs with tremendous humor and hope, and a sizeable dose of irreverence.

Ernie Harburg, son and biographer of Yip Harburg, describes the show as “a keen portrait of both Yip and his wondrous lyrics.”

Nancy will appear with her music director, Gregory Toroian, on piano and David Finck, on bass.  The show is directed by Helen Baldassare.

Nancy Stearns:
Nancy Stearns has been performing annually in New York City cabaret rooms with her music director, Gregory Toroian, since 2001.  Nancy returns to the Metropolitan Room with her show “Yip Harburg: With Humor and Hope,” which she previously performed in 2009.

A lawyer by day, Nancy first “found” cabaret as a student at Helen Baldassare’s Cabaret Performance Workshop, for which Nancy now serves as Administrator.

Nancy has recorded seven of her shows with Gregory Toroian, on piano and David Finck, on bass: The Words of Women (2006), Sing Me A Song With Social Significance … Or Not (2006), With Rhyme, But For No Particular Reason (2007), This Moment (2008), Yip Harburg: With Humor and Hope (2009), Weather or Not (2011), and A Wish (2012).

Nancy’s CDs are available for sale at www.CDBaby.com and iTunes, and have received airplay on radio stations throughout the U.S. and Canada, in the Netherlands, Australia and Japan, and can be heard on internet radio at www.Pandora.com.

Nancy repeatedly appeared at Barnes & Noble/Lincoln Triangle, New York City in the MAC award winning Any Wednesday series performing selections from her CDs and as part of a celebration of the Broadway revival of Finian’s Rainbow,  and in the 2nd Annual Sag Harbor American Music Festival, Sag Harbor, NY.

Press Quotes
“Nancy Stearns’s light voice might not make it through the auditions at the Metropolitan Opera, but that’s okay with me because she’s a personable charmer, and in the intimate surroundings of a cabaret room, she delivered an enjoyable hour of music and entertainment.  She nailed the lyrics of the songs she sang as if she were the writer and wanted to be certain you understood exactly what the number was all about.  And if there was any doubt about just what that might be, all you had to do is watch her.  She’s got as mobile a face as a mime, and the body language to match.” (Peter Leavy: Cabaret Scenes)

“Her delight in well-crafted intelligent songs is infectious. … As a lawyer who dedicated her career to progressive causes and equal rights, she’s a kindred spirit to the pacifist writer of similar bent … .  As usual, her musical partners here (and on the resultant CD) are sterling pianist Gregory Toroian and bassist David Finck, supplying rich, surprising, welcome textures.” (Rob Lester: Cabaret Scenes reviewing Nancy’s show devoted to the lyrics of Yip Harburg, “Yip Harburg: With Humor and Hope”)
